Ear Infections in Anaheim: Symptoms, Causes, and Care

Share this post:

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons families seek care, especially for young children, and they can be surprisingly painful. Many improve on their own, but some need treatment, so it helps to recognize the signs and know when an ear infection in Anaheim should be seen.

What an Ear Infection Is

A middle ear infection, known medically as otitis media, happens when fluid and germs build up behind the eardrum, often after a cold or an allergy flare causes congestion. The trapped fluid can become infected, leading to pain, pressure, and sometimes a temporary change in hearing. Ear problems can also involve fluid behind the eardrum without an active infection, which may cause a plugged or muffled feeling. Children get ear infections more often than adults because the small tubes that drain the middle ear are shorter and more level, so they clog more easily.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms can differ between adults and young children. Common signs include:

  • Ear pain, often worse when lying down
  • A feeling of fullness, pressure, or muffled hearing
  • Fever
  • Fluid draining from the ear
  • Trouble sleeping

In babies and toddlers who cannot describe the pain, watch for tugging or pulling at the ear, unusual fussiness or crying, trouble sleeping, reduced appetite, or problems with balance.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

Ear infections usually follow an upper respiratory illness such as a cold, the flu, or allergies that cause swelling and congestion. Factors that make them more likely include:

  • Young age, because of the shape of a child’s ear passages
  • Group childcare, where colds spread easily
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Bottle-feeding while lying flat
  • Seasonal allergies

Most ear infections involve bacteria or viruses that take hold after the ear becomes congested.

What You Can Do at Home

Many mild ear infections improve on their own, and you can stay comfortable while you watch for changes:

  • Rest and drink fluids
  • Use a warm compress against the ear for comfort
  • Manage fever and pain with over-the-counter options appropriate for the person’s age, following the label
  • Keep the ear dry

Do not put cotton swabs, oils, or other objects into the ear canal. If symptoms are not improving, or are getting worse, have the ear examined.

Red Flags: When to Seek Care

See a provider if ear pain is severe or lasts more than a day or two, there is a high or persistent fever, you see fluid, pus, or blood draining from the ear, hearing seems reduced, or a young child is very uncomfortable or not improving. Get prompt care for severe pain, swelling or redness behind the ear, a stiff neck, a severe headache, dizziness, or facial weakness, which can signal a more serious problem and may need emergency evaluation.
