COVID-19 in Anaheim: Symptoms, Testing, and When to Get Seen

Share this post:

COVID-19 is now part of the mix of respiratory illnesses we see each year, alongside colds and the flu. Most cases are mild, but testing still matters for getting the right care and for avoiding spreading it to others. This guide covers COVID-19 symptoms, when it makes sense to test, the types of tests, and when to be seen here in Anaheim.

COVID-19 Symptoms

COVID-19 can cause a range of symptoms, which overlap with colds and the flu. Common ones include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or a runny nose
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue and body aches
  • Headache
  • A new loss of taste or smell

Symptoms can be mild or more serious, and some people have no symptoms at all while still being able to spread the virus. Because COVID-19, the flu, and a cold can look alike, testing is often the only way to tell them apart.

COVID-19, the Flu, or a Cold?

The symptoms overlap so much that it is hard to tell these illnesses apart by feel alone. A cold is usually mild and centered in the nose and throat. The flu and COVID-19 can both bring fever, body aches, and fatigue, and either can become serious. Telling them apart can matter, because the flu and COVID-19 each have specific treatments that work best when started early, and that is where testing comes in.

When to Test

Consider testing if you:

  • Have symptoms that could be COVID-19
  • Were in close contact with someone who tested positive
  • Are going to be around someone at higher risk
  • Need a result for travel, work, or school

If you test early and the result is negative but symptoms continue, testing again a day or two later can help, since it can take time for a test to turn positive.

Types of Tests

There are two main types:

  • Rapid antigen tests give results in minutes and are convenient, though they can miss early or low-level infections
  • PCR tests are more sensitive and are processed in a lab, so results take longer

A provider can help you decide which test fits your situation, and what a result means alongside your symptoms.

If You Test Positive

Most people recover at home with rest and fluids. To protect others, follow current public health guidance on isolation and masking, which is updated over time. Let your close contacts know, and keep an eye on your symptoms. People at higher risk, including older adults, those who are pregnant, and anyone with a chronic condition or weakened immune system, should check with a provider promptly, since treatment options work best when started early.

Red Flags: When to Seek Care

Seek medical care if your symptoms are getting worse rather than better, you have a high or lasting fever, or you are at higher risk and want guidance on treatment. Call 911 or go to the emergency room for trouble breathing or shortness of breath, persistent chest pain or pressure, confusion, trouble staying awake, or bluish lips or face.

Staying Healthy

Staying up to date on recommended COVID-19 vaccines, washing your hands, improving indoor air flow, and staying home when sick all help reduce spread, especially during respiratory illness season.
